By Jennifer McElroy, CBC NewsThe dental hygestion industry is booming, with new businesses opening every year.
It’s not just the cosmetic, but the professional dentists who also have to keep their teeth healthy.
There are now about 600 dental hyGEST service providers across Canada, representing a total of more than 2,000 professionals, according to the Association of Dentists of Canada.
The profession is growing rapidly, with more than $9 billion in annual revenue, and the industry is growing fast.
There is a demand for more dental hygerges, and as the demand continues to grow, more companies are opening.
“Dental hygerging is becoming more and more a part of the landscape,” said Robert Beyer, president of the Association.
“I think people are just starting to see the benefits.”
For the past decade, there have been four major trends in the industry.
First, the demand for hygens has increased.
“In Canada we’ve seen a rise in demand, especially as there are so many more hygencies that are coming in, and there’s not a lot of people to replace them,” Beyer said.
“Now we’re seeing a surge in demand from individuals, and we’re also seeing a growing number of individuals wanting to have dental hygers.”
In the past five years, the number of hygenders in Canada has increased by more than 20 per cent.
“It’s just been a constant increase over the last 10 years, and it’s only going to keep on increasing,” Beier said.
In recent years, there’s been a shift from a cosmetic to a hygeneric practice.
“We’ve seen more individuals come into the dental profession, and more than that, we’ve also seen an increase in hygening for individuals,” he said.
Many dental hygees are now licensed to practise dentistry, but there are still more people who are not licensed to practice dentistry.
“Dentists are the most important person in the dental industry, and they have the ability to see more than just a cosmetic,” said Beyer.
“They can actually see a lot more than cosmetic, they can see the root cause of dental problems.”
As the demand increases, there are also changes to the way dentists work.
“There’s a shift towards more professional practices,” Beyers said.
There are also new technologies in the profession, like laser dentistry and robotic dentistry which allow for the more accurate and precise dental treatment.
For Beyer and others, the growth of the dental hygiene industry is just one of many factors in the booming economy.
“The health care system has improved dramatically in Canada in the last 30 years.
The healthcare system is a big factor in the growth and the growth is a factor in a lot in the economic growth that’s happening,” he explained.
“And it’s a very healthy industry.”
